Philadelphia, the "City of Brotherly Love" and the "Birthplace of Independence" has a long, storied history and is home to many infamously reputed haunted locations.

Places like Eastern State Penitentiary, Fort Mifflin, and even the Betsy Ross House are historical landmarks that have been featured prominently in paranormal programs, magazines, etc.

Much less well known (even to locals) is Library Hall, on 5th Street just east of Independence Hall. Home of the American Philosophical, the specters of this locale have long been linked to none other than Benjamin Franklin.

Franklin's mischievous ghost has been said to wander the rows of the library within, often with a stack of books tucked under one arm and is walking cane in the other.

Much more curious (and downright humorous) are the reports of the statue of Franklin that stands in a cove carved above the 5th Street entrance to the building. Numerous reports over the years have claimed that the statue moves, the head sometimes turning to follow those walking down 5th or the arms swinging about.

There is also local lore - believe it or not - about the statue leaping down into the street and dancing (!) at the stroke of midnight during a full moon phase.

That last one is tough to reconcile, but there are enough people who have reported this occurrence to suggest that the possibility has merit.

So... what do you think? Have you ever explored this location, or are you a Philadelphia local with more information on what may (or may not) be going on here?

We'd love to hear more about this location and the mysterious happenings around the Franklin statue...Al Alvenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00745361767264767614noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5328385830915207565.post-7818760554351400152011-09-07T12:39:00.000-07:002011-09-07T12:43:48.980-07:00Haunt of the Day: SeaView Terrace (Carey Mansion)

Tonight's episode of Ghost Hunters (9 p.m. on Syfy) will feature an investigation of Carey Mansion in Newport, Rhode Island.

The sprawling estate, originally known as SeaView Terrace, is perhaps best known from the television series Dark Shadows (1966-71), which used its exterior as the fictional Collinwood Mansion.

Completed in 1928, the massive Frech Renaissance chateau is regarded as the last of the great "Summer Cottages" and is the fifth largest of Newport's famous mansions.

I am very interested in tonight's investigation, as I am not aware of any specific claims as to paranormal activity at this location. Given it's long history, shear size, and seaside location, I am certain there are many stories.

Are you familiar with SeaView Terrace, or have you perhaps ever toured or investigated the mansion?

Looking forward to hearing everyone's feedback on tonight's episode. Here is the teaser trailer:

This is comedian Chris Elliott's spoof of "Ghost Hunters" (even though the YouTube description says "Ghostbusters"), as seen on the Late Show with David Letterman in late 2006.

Pretty funny stuff. Honestly, we have no idea why CBS didn't pick this show up. They really missed the boat on this one... ;)
According to WVLA in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a deer hunter claims he captured this image wandering through the wilderness in nearby Berwick on his stand camera.

The hunter reported that the camera was broken when he came to retrieve it, but the strange image was saved to its memory card.
Shot in 1910 at Edison Studios in Brooklyn, the unbilled cast included Augustus Phillips as Dr. Frankenstein, Charles Ogle as the Monster, and Mary Fuller as the doctor's fiancée.

Shot over a span of three days, the film is just a little over 12 minutes long. It is in the public domain and is available in its entirety on YouTube...

Two things struck us while watching this short film. One, was that this must have terrified moviegoers upon its release; though tame by today's standards, it had few (if any) parallels back in 1910.

Also, it is amazing to think how far movie-making technology would come over the next two decades. See the trailer for the Universal's classic 1931 version of Frankenstein for proof...
What is your favorite?

Whether you're a fan of the "classic monster" flicks that includes Count Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolfman, or more a inclined to enjoy the slasher films featuring the likes of Michael Myers, Freddie Kruger, and Jason Voorhees, the roots of the genre can be attributed to one landmark production...
A&E Network's popular reality series Paranormal State will kick off its fifth season this Sunday, October 17, at 9 p.m. EST.

For those unfamiliar with the show, it follows and stars members of the Paranormal Research Society, a student-run club at Pennsylvania State University. Programs feature the members' investigations of alleged paranormal phenomena and reputedly haunted houses.
Given it's long, rich, and often-emotional history, it's no surprise that many consider Philadelphia to be among the most haunted cities in the United States.

Often, paranormal sightings and activities are linked to the town's Revolutionary War era landmarks, such as Fort Mifflin, City Tavern, and St. Peter's Church Cemetery. Or the Gothic, fortress-like confines of Eastern State Penitentiary (opened in 1829).

One landmark that has gone virtually unexplored up until now is the Philadelphia Zoo.

"America's First Zoo" was chartered in 1859. It's opening was delayed by the Civil War, with the gates finally opening on July 1, 1874.

Tonight, the first ever paranormal investigation of the zoological grounds will be featured on Ghost Hunters (9 p.m. on SyFy). The episode was filmed in early April.

Locations explored include the Solitude House, which was built by John Penn (grandson of city founder William Penn) in 1784. Predating the opening of the zoo by nearly 100 years, the structure is said to have quite a history. In more recent years, it housed reptile exhibits.

(For more on the Solitude House and its ongoing restoration, see this recent article from the Philadelphia Inquirer.)

Also featured will be the Penrose Building, which formerly functioned as a research laboratory and vet hospital, and the Shelly Building, now used as administration offices.

Reportedly, the zoo staff has experienced a wide range of potentially-paranormal activity over the years, including flickering lights and several reports of partial and full-bodied apparitions roaming the aforementioned buildings and the zoo's winding outdoor pathways.

No animal spirits are thought to be haunting the grounds, but it should be interesting to see what otherworldly evidence - if any - Jason Hawes, Grant Wilson, and crew are able to uncover...Al Alvenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00745361767264767614noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5328385830915207565.post-34095753955574938382010-06-25T08:49:00.000-07:002010-06-25T23:22:25.857-07:00Tori Spelling claims contact with Farrah Fawcet's ghost

In a recent interview with Out Magazine, Tori Spelling claims that she made contact with the spirit of Farrah Fawcet through an over-the-phone channeling session with psychic medium John Edwards.

Fawcet passed away one year ago after a long battle with cancer.

"It was pretty surreal," Spelling says. "We were neighbors for years. She basically wanted me to give a message to [Fawcett's son] Redmond and to her family and she was doing these very specific call-outs for things that they would understand."

It must be noted that Spelling is currently in the midst of promoting a new book - "Uncharted TerriTORI" - and that some outlets, including the Huffington Post, have already begun to question the sincerity of her claim.
For anyone who missed the news the other day, Syfy has renewed Ghost Hunters for a seventh season. From the official press release:

Ghost Hunters, Syfy’s hugely successful reality series, has been renewed for a triumphant seventh season. After inspiring two spin-offs, creating the hottest paranormal franchise in cable, Ghost Hunters has set the standard for paranormal investigating and has cemented its place as a destination for spine-tingling entertainment! Its reign will continue with 25 all-new episodes, slated to premiere on Syfy in 2011.

Since the series debuted in 2004, viewers have flocked to Syfy on Wednesday nights to catch the latest hair-raising cases from the files of TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society), led by Rhode Island plumbers Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson. The first half of season six (airing spring 2010), averaged a 1.9 Household rating, 2.6 million total viewers, 1.6 million Adults 18-49 and 1.6 million Adults 25-54. Syfy was the #1 cable network inGhost Hunters‘ 9pm timeslot for the spring season.

Before season seven debuts, viewers can enjoy new episodes from the entire Ghost Hunters franchise all summer and fall.
The idea to start a blog based on the page struck me a while back, so, at long last, here we go!

The first question I asked myself is one that continues to persist:

Quite simply, what should the function of the blog be?

To start, the blog will basically be an extension of the FB page. We will include daily notes on paranormal news, post interesting photos, pose various questions for our readers to take part in, and share info on our friends' investigations and findings.

On that last note, we'd also like to establish a handy master list of paranormal teams, and organizations around the world. So, whether your group is big or small, well-established or just starting out, please drop us a line so that we can include you in our listings.

We are also interested in hearing about your latest exploits. Have you performed a recent investigation and would like us to share your analysis with our readers? We would be more than happy to do so!

Drop us a line anytime at: hauntedplacesblog@gmail.com

Thanks to everyone for reading and supporting the FB page. We're looking forward to the next step in the evolution of Hauntings / Haunted Places through this blog.

Happy Hauntings, everyone!Al Alvenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00745361767264767614noreply@blogger.com1
